The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is introducing the contactless passport application system for Nigerians in Europe to easily apply and renew their travel documents online.

Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs Kemi Nandap, yesterday, announced that the service which will launch on February 7 will have its coordinating centre in the UK.

She explained that Nigerians in the diaspora would now be able to process passport applications and renewal “from the comfort of their homes.”

The launch of the contactless passport system in Europe comes after that of Canada in November 2024.

Who Can use the NIS Contacless Ssystem

The system will allow for an easy passport application process for Nigerians abroad while reducing travel costs and saving time.

While this is true, only existing passport holders can use the system successfully, not fresh applicants or even minors. Passport renewal applications can begin as early as a year before expiration.

According to Nandap, the NIS had been charged by President Bola Tinubu with making life easier for the diaspora. Hence the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has approved a system to facilitate the passport process in New York, to address the backlog and bring experience there.

Other parts of the US and neighbouring locations can expect passport front offices in a short time.

NIDCOM received commendations from the NIS for its dependable partnership and for supporting its advocacy in bringing awareness to issues that affect Nigerians living abroad.
