IATA Air Travel Report on Nigeria Shows How Aviation is Expanding Since 2020

The Nigerian aviation industry is approaching a new dawn in air travel numbers, as the IATA sample forecast for a 20-year period shows. In less than 10 years from now, the 2020 report explains how Nigeria’s Air passenger market will grow steadily.

This was forecasted using the baseline growth rate of 3.4% per year, 2014–2034. This growth rate remains constant across the entire 20-year period shown.

While it is normal for passenger numbers to increase over time, Nigeria’s total air passengers (domestic + international) are projected beyond normal.

Between 2014 and 2034, Nigeria gains an additional 87,000 passengers per year. This is an increase of about 95% over 20 years.

If regulations ease globally and emerging markets open up faster, Nigeria’s growth rate jumps to 6.0% per year, almost double the baseline. Passenger numbers will rise from about 134,000 in 2014 to well over 455,000 by 2034.

This would mean Nigeria’s aviation market more than triples in 20 years under a favourable environment.

The demand for air travel will expand.

Even though Nigeria is not among the top 20 global markets, its steady and consistent growth signals strong long-term demand.

However, for any of these to materialise, infrastructure in the country will need to keep up. Need for airport expansion in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. It will also be dependent on more regional connectivity within West Africa. Better international linkages, especially to Europe, Middle East, and domestic routes would also play a huge role.

Nigeria will become a more important African hub.

Africa overall grows at 3.6%, slightly higher than Nigeria’s baseline, 3.4%, chances are, Nigeria outperforms the continent in this time period.

From this growth, airlines across the globe will see increasing opportunity with International carriers expanding West African operations.

The IATA forecast shows that Nigeria’s aviation market will almost double by 2034 under the baseline scenario. It could more than triple under a more optimistic regulatory and economic environment.
