Nnamdi Kanu Awarded 10 Million Kenyan Shillings After High Court Rule

A High Court in Nairobi, Kenya, has ruled that the abduction, detention, and forcible transfer of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021 were unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional.

Justice E.C. Mwita found that the Kenyan government violated Kanu’s constitutional rights by failing to protect him after he lawfully entered Kenya, subjecting him to solitary confinement, torture, denial of food and medication, humiliation, and forcible removal without legal process.

The court awarded Kanu 10 million Kenyan shillings in damages against the Kenyan government for gross violations of his fundamental human rights.

The judgment also condemned the Nigerian government’s role in the rendition, describing the act as a criminal, state-sponsored international terrorism involving high-level officials from both countries. IPOB hailed the ruling as a landmark victory that vindicates their position that Kanu’s transfer was an extraordinary rendition, not lawful extradition.

They praised Kenyan lawyer Professor PLO Lumumba and the judiciary for delivering a fearless verdict despite political and diplomatic pressures. IPOB vowed to pursue global accountability for those responsible, emphasizing that this ruling marks the beginning of a wider campaign for justice against crimes against humanity.
