TCN Pushes Abuja Substation Projects Amid Repeated National Grid Collapses

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says it is strengthening power infrastructure in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It is constructing five new substations, even as the country continues to grapple with repeated collapses of the national electricity grid.

Joshua Unjito reports that two of the five substations have been completed, while the remaining three are nearing completion. The projects are aimed at improving power supply, stability and reliability in Abuja, where electricity demand has continued to rise alongside rapid urban expansion.

According to TCN, the additional substations are located in Guarimpa, New Apo, Wumba, Kuje and Lube, and are designed to increase bulk power available for onward distribution across the city. The Guarimpa substation has already been completed and inaugurated, though it is currently underutilised by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). The Kuje substation is also ready, while construction work at New Apo, Wumba and Lube is at an advanced stage.

TCN officials explained that the projects are intended to meet growing local demand within Abuja Municipal Area Council and surrounding districts. The company disclosed that the new facilities will provide a combined capacity of 3×60 MVA, with additional bulk power capacity of 2×150 MVA expected to be evacuated through the network.

However, TCN noted that current levels of development and distribution infrastructure may limit immediate full utilisation of the available capacity.

“These interventions are to meet up with the local demand of Abuja municipal,” a TCN official said. “But development is not yet fully aligned with our planning projections, so the entire capacity may not be taken at once.”

The Abuja substation projects are being implemented under the Abuja Ring Project, which TCN says is part of its broader strategy to expand the transmission network and boost wheeling capacity.

The development comes against the backdrop of recent nationwide grid collapses that have plunged large parts of the country into darkness and renewed concerns about the fragility of Nigeria’s power transmission system. In recent months, the national grid has suffered multiple partial and total collapses, disrupting electricity supply across several states and highlighting longstanding challenges including aging infrastructure, operational constraints and limited system redundancy.

While TCN has attributed some of the collapses to technical faults and external disturbances, power sector analysts argue that sustained investment in transmission infrastructure and grid resilience is critical to reducing the frequency of system failures.

TCN says projects like the Abuja Ring expansion are part of ongoing efforts to address these challenges by strengthening the network, improving system stability and reducing the risk of cascading failures. However, stakeholders note that improved coordination between transmission and distribution companies will be essential to ensure that newly added capacity translates into reliable power supply for end users.
