Diezani Alison-Madueke Appears in UK Court as Bribery Trial Nears

London — Former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has appeared before a court in the United Kingdom as legal proceedings against her advance toward a full criminal trial.

Alison-Madueke was present at the Southwark Crown Court in London on Monday for a preliminary hearing relating to charges of alleged bribery brought by the UK government. The session, held in Court 8 before Justice Thornton, forms part of procedural steps ahead of the substantive trial scheduled to commence on January 26, 2026.

The former minister is accused of accepting bribes while in office in exchange for the award of lucrative oil and gas contracts, allegations she has consistently denied.

The Charges

In August 2023, the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA) formally charged Alison-Madueke, alleging that she received at least £100,000 in illicit payments. The said offence occurred during her tenure as Nigeria’s petroleum minister and investigators said, the alleged payments were part of a broader corruption scheme.

It was further labelled an abuse of public office was abused for personal enrichment.

During her service, Alison-Madueke was one of the most powerful figures in Nigeria’s oil sector. She also served as President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 2014, becoming the first woman to hold the position.

Bail and Court Restrictions

Following her arrest in the UK, Alison-Madueke was granted bail in October 2023 by the Westminster Magistrates Court, which set bail at £70,000. The court, citing concerns that she posed a flight risk, imposed strict conditions on her release.

These included a nightly curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m, mandatory use of an electronic monitoring tag and the provision of a £70,000 surety. She was only permitted to leave court custody after meeting all bail conditions.

Analysts say the outcome of the UK case could have significant implications for Nigeria’s international anti-corruption cooperation. More so, it will influence asset recovery frameworks and boost public confidence in accountability for high-level officeholders.
