Nigeria Declares Security Emergency, Deepens U.S. Ties Amid Rising Terror

Nigeria has intensified its national security posture, formally declaring security emergencies in vulnerable and high-risk areas. The Federal Government is also deepening cooperation with the United States to confront terrorism, insurgency and rising transnational crimes.

The renewed focus on security was outlined by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, during a high-level working group meeting between Nigerian officials and U.S. government representatives. Ribadu reaffirmed that the protection of all Nigerians, across religious, ethnic and regional lines, remains a core priority of the administration. He stressed that freedom of belief and peaceful coexistence are non-negotiable.

“This protection of all citizens, Christians, Muslims and those of other beliefs, is non-negotiable,” the NSA said. “Violence framed along religious lines is treated as an attack on the Nigerian state itself.”

Building on Earlier Security Commitments

The engagement marks the third high-level security dialogue between Nigeria and the United States since Nigeria’s official visit to Washington in November 2025. It builds on earlier commitments to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation, intelligence sharing and joint operational planning in the country.

Nigeria continues to battle insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West and farmer-herder violence across parts of the Middle Belt.

U.S. officials, during the meeting, expressed particular concern over the recent kidnapping of more than 100 people in Kaduna State. They urged intensified efforts to dismantle insurgent and criminal networks and secure the release of victims.

They also called on authorities to work closely with local governments and non-state actors to support affected families and communities.

National Security Emergency Declared in Nigeria

In response to the worsening security landscape, the Federal Government has formally declared a national security emergency in identified flashpoints. This authorises intensified joint operations and the deployment of additional security forces to priority locations.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, speaking on the sidelines of the Abuja security engagement, said the declaration reflects the government’s resolve to move from reactive responses to proactive, coordinated action.

According to him, the bilateral engagement with the United States underscores a shared commitment to religious freedom and civilian protection. Additionally, it underscores a strategic partnership built on trust and shared responsibility.

Ribadu further noted that Nigeria’s growing partnership with the United States has already delivered tangible operational gains. This includes closer intelligence sharing, sustained military engagements and strengthened joint planning between Nigerian security agencies and their U.S. counterparts.

The NSA said Nigeria is redoubling efforts to dismantle terrorist networks, logistics hubs and support structures used by criminal and extremist elements, while integrating security operations with the rule of law, humanitarian safeguards and strategic communication to boost public confidence.

“This integrated approach ensures that operational successes translate into trust and reassurance for citizens,” he said.
