Security and Military Hardware Production Takes Off in Nigeria

Vinicius International has officially commenced local production of security hardware in Nigeria. This marks a significant step towards reducing Africa’s dependence on imported defence equipment.

The company has established an armoured vehicle assembly line and an integrated surveillance solutions hub in Abuja. Vinicius International is fully licensed under the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

Saifullahi Babangida, CEO of Vinicius Group, emphasized that this is more than just manufacturing hardware. He stated that it’s a move towards sovereignty, job creation, and developing the skills necessary for African nations to protect themselves with locally made solutions.

The facility aims to assemble tactical armoured vehicles designed specifically for Africa’s terrain and security conditions. More so, it integrates advanced surveillance and unmanned aerial systems tailored to local needs.

The initiative comes at a critical time as Africa’s military expenditure surged to $51.6 billion in 2023, a 22% increase from the previous year. Yet over 95% of the continent’s security hardware is still imported from countries like Russia, China, the US, and Europe.

This dependency often causes supply delays and exposes countries to geopolitical risks.

Vinicius International is also investing in training through its Advanced Security Command and Control (ASCC) division. It wants to equip security personnel with technical expertise to operate and maintain these advanced systems.

The company has already delivered over 1,000 armoured vehicles to Nigerian security forces as of January 2024, indicating operational scale.

The facility is expected to serve as a regional production hub for West and Central Africa, where demand for reliable, locally-built security hardware is growing due to rising insecurity.

Vinicius plans to expand its operations into a broader West African industrial base and seek partnerships with international manufacturers to enhance technology transfer and long-term defence capabilities.

By localizing production, assembling vehicles, and training personnel within Africa, Vinicius is creating jobs, building technical capacity, and ensuring that value remains within the continent, which it sees as essential for Africa’s future security autonomy.

This development represents a major milestone for indigenous security manufacturing and marks Nigeria’s growing role in Africa’s defence industry.
